Richard Somonte Llerena (Havana, 1991)
“In times where the mythology of anti-art, aestheticism and the absence of craft are evident, the work of Richard Somonte is fueled by a reinterpretation of tradition (mainly Western and insular) … and always closely linked to the landscape. His work is inserted into a paradoxical rarity, because it eludes the conventions of contemporary artistic fashion through the more conventional medium of painting.”
Somonte graduated from the prestigious San Alej
andro Academy in Havana in 2010 although he started exhibiting as early as 2008. In that same year he was won First Prize in the Concurso Exposición: Fiesta Nacional Estado de Qatar from the Embassy of Qatar in Cuba. As well as appearing in solo and collective exhibitions mainly in Havana, he presented a solo show in Barcelona in 2015. His work is held in numerous collections in Cuba and internationally including Mexico, Spain, France, Costa Rica and the US.
